Consignments of smuggled dried turmeric and glyphosate held in Kalpitiya

A special operation carried out by the Navy at Daluwa beach in Kalpitiya today (26th January 2021) led to the apprehension of 03 suspects and seizure of about 1340kg of dried turmeric as well as 80kg of glyphosate attempted to be smuggled into the country.

Update to the news release on ‘Liberian-flagged bulk carrier runs aground at Little Basses ’ on 24th January 2021

The high tide experienced last evening (24th January) refloated the bulk carrier MV Eurosun that ran aground on the Little Basses Reef, about 5.5 nautical miles (10km) off the southeastern coast of the island on 23rd January. Following the ship moved out of the danger, it was anchored in a safer area about 05 nautical miles southwest of the Little Basses Reef.

Indian fisherman on poaching vessel tests positive for COVID-19 following quarantine period

Sri Lanka Navy during a special operation in northern seas on 09th January 2021 apprehended 09 Indian fishermen along with their trawler, for poaching in Sri Lankan waters. Subsequent to this apprehension, these 09 individuals were directed for 14 days of quarantine due to COVID -19 concerns.

Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) ‘Rathnadeepa’ boarded with a team of Navy divers reached MV ‘Eurosun’ that ran aground at Little Basses about 5.5 nautical miles (10km) off the southeastern coast of the island on 23rd January and preliminary investigation into the incident got underway.

A bulk carrier named ‘MV Eurosun’ en route to Trincomalee, Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi Port of UAE carrying clinker, ran aground at Little Basses which is about 5.5 nautical miles (10km) off the southeastern coast of the island.

Sri Lanka Navy launched a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation last night in search of a sunken Indian fishing boat and its fishermen, in Sri Lankan waters about 8 nautical miles (15 km) within the IMBL northwest of Delft Island, following a resisting arrest incident took place in the dark hours on 18th January 2021.
