Alertness of naval personnel saves a drowning woman

Responding swiftly to the plight of a woman who was at the risk of drowning in seas off Uswetakeiyawa, 04 naval personnel managed to rescue her from a watery grave in the morning hours on 09th August 2021.

Chef MBP Marasinghe engaged in the morning routine at the Malima Club House located in the vicinity of Uswetakeiyawa beach has first spotted the woman in a desperate situation, as she was at the risk of drowning at sea right in front of the reception hall. Leaping into action promptly, Chef MBP Marasinghe with the assistance of his fellow sailors; Chief Petty Officer (Chef) HMSN Kumara and Leading Seaman Nishantha, managed to rescue the woman who was drowning down a reef at sea.

Having retrieved her from the jaws of death, she was administered first aid by Petty Officer EMS Ekanayake attached to the Malima Club House. The rescued woman is a 50-year-old resident of School Road, Katuneriya. After informing the Pamunugama Police regarding the incident, the woman was handed over to the police station for onward action.

Irrespective of their job profile in the organization, this incident proved that those involved in the rescue could make the good use of watchfulness of a serviceman and swimming proficiency they gained as sailors to save a precious life.
