Navy foils gold smuggling attempt, 02 suspects held with over 05kg of gold

The Navy, with the assistance of Sri Lanka Coast Guard managed to apprehend 02 suspects with about 05kg and 500g of gold being smuggled via sea routes, during a special search operation carried out in northern seas on 28th August 2020.

Based on a tip-off received by the Northern Naval Command, this special operation was carried out about 14.5 nautical miles off Kovilan Lighthouse in Karainagar, with the assistance of Sri Lanka Coast Guard. Upon detection of a suspicious dinghy at sea, naval personnel recovered about 05kg and 500g of gold in 04 parcels aboard and held 02 suspects involved in the smuggling racket.

Meanwhile, the suspects who are 30 and 32 years of age together with seized consignment of gold were handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office for onward investigation.
