Navy apprehends 03 persons with explosives used for fishing

The Navy apprehended 03 persons with explosive items, during a search conducted in Palaviya, Kilinochchi on 20th June 2020.

Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular operations to prevent the practice of using explosives to kill schools of fish for easy collection as explosion often destroys the underlying habitat that supports fish and corals.

Accordingly, naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command during a search conducted in a fishing hamlet in Palaviya, Kilinochchi had found 05 non-electric detonators and 02 detonator codes (each about 08 inches). Three suspects were also taken into naval custody, in connection to this incident.

The accused were identified as residents of Velanai in Jaffna and Weravil in Walaipadu, aged 31, 50 and 57. The apprehended persons along with the explosive items were handed over to the Jeypuram Police for further investigation.
