Commander of the Navy addresses course no. 15 student officers of DSCSC

At the invitation of Commandant Defence Services Command & Staff College (DSCSC), Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne today (06th December 2021) addressed the student officers of the course no. 15 of DSCSC, Sapugaskanda.

Upon his arrival, Commander of the Navy was warmly received by Commandant DSCSC, Major General IHMNN Herath. Commander of the Navy’s address to the student officers was themed under ‘Shaping the Country’s Naval Power: Past, Present and Future’. During his informative lecture, Commander of the Navy drew attention on the previous developments of naval power in the island nation and what the present and future course of the Navy should be in the new geopolitical context.

Further, he shed light on the Navy’s undertakings in prevention of Piracy, Maritime Terrorism, Drug Trafficking, Gun Running, Human Smuggling, Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, Marine Pollution and providing assistance to the fishing and naval communities in distress, even if there is no visible enemy in the post-war period.

The emerging new dynamics of the Indian Ocean will demand SLN to modernise its naval force in terms of shaping our naval fleet, sensors, infrastructure and training in order to deal with various threats by understanding ways and acquiring means to face the challenges in future, he further opined. Moreover, he touched upon the Navy’s progression to become a capable force, that can meet national aspiration in the future as well.

Deputy Commandant Defence Services Command and Staff College, Major General HMLD Herath, Chief Instructor (Army), Brigadier PCL Gunawardena, Brigadier Coordinating, Brigadier HLC Liyanage, Chief Instructor (Navy), Commodore NPW Amaradasa, Chief Instructor (Air Force), Air Commodore SKA Senarathna, academic and directing staff and student officers of course no. 15 were also present on this occasion.

The event was held adhering to COVID-19 protocols in effect due to pandemic concerns. At the end of the address, Commander of the Navy and Commandant Defence Services Command & Staff College exchanged mementoes as a gesture of goodwill.
