Navy brings ashore a fisherman injured at high seas for treatment

Sri Lanka Navy today (04th June 2021) dispatched Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) ‘Sayura’ to bring ashore an injured fisherman for treatment. The fisherman onboard a local multi-day fishing trawler had been in critical condition due to a severe injury while at high seas, about 345 nautical miles (about 638km) from the Great Basses Lighthouse to the southeast of Sri Lanka. Upon retrieving the patient aboard SLNS ‘Sayura’ around 1130 hrs today, he was administered first aid by the Navy.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, has disseminated the distress to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo at Navy Headquarters, about a fisherman onboard a multi-day fishing trawler in critical condition with severe injury to a leg following an accident while at sea. This fishing trawler ‘Du Bhashi’ (Register No: IMUL-A-0928 MTR) had ventured out for fishing from the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour on 21st April 2021.

In response to a request for assistance, Sri Lanka Navy sent out SLNS Sayura to fetch the injured fisherman for treatment. Having retrieved the injured fisherman from the multi-day fishing trawler at high seas, SLNS Sayura is now cruising ashore while administering the patients with necessary first aid and it is expected to arrive at the port of Hambantota tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, the Navy stands ready to respond to this nature of eventualities around the clock, with a view to assist naval and fishing community in distress in Sri Lanka’s Search and Rescue Region.
