Navy seizes over 902kg of smuggled dried turmeric in Mannar

The Navy nabbed 02 suspects with a stock of over 902kg of dried turmeric, while being smuggled by sea. The apprehension was made at the Thalvupadu Beach in Mannar, during a special search conducted by the Navy on 02nd October 2020.

Accordingly, the North Central Naval Command, during a special search operation, had found this consignment of dried turmeric attempted to be smuggled into the country by sea, after inspecting a suspicious dinghy arrived at the Thalvupadu Beach. The smuggled stock of turmeric weighing over 902kg in wet weight had been stuffed in 19 gunny sacks laden on the dinghy. The 02 suspects along with the dinghy were also held by the Navy in connection to this racketeering.

The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Pudukuduirippu, Mannar aged 22 and 48. Meanwhile, the consignment of turmeric handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office for onward investigation and the suspects were produced to the Medical Officer of Health, Mannar for quarantine. Following the quarantine process, the accused along with the dinghy will be handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office for onward investigation.
