Navy continues its crackdowns on wide-ranging illegal acts

As part of its anti-drug operations being carried out with a view to help eradicate the drug menace from the country, the Navy managed to apprehend 02 suspects along with narcotic substances and several contraband, from 30th August to 03rd August 2020.

Continuing its successful streak of naval operations, the Navy with the assistance of Police Special Task Force (STF) pounced on a drug peddler attempting to sell 550mg of heroin, during a coordinated operation conducted in Pesalai. Further, naval troops had also seized about 690kg of beedi leaves attempted to be smuggled into the country, at the old jetty of Talaimannar.

On a similar note, the Southern Naval Command in coordination with the Thanamalwila Police Anti-Corruption Unit took hold of another suspect in possession of 900g of local cannabis, in the general area of Kahakurullanpelessa, Thanamalwila. Meanwhile, the Western Naval Command together with Police STF raided an illicit arrack den at Aththanagalu Oya area and held 720 litres of moonshine stored in 24 barrels.

The accused held during these operations, together with seized items, were handed over to the Pesalai Police, Jaffna Customs Office, Thanamalwila Police and Gonahena STF for onward legal action.
