Navy apprehends sixteen local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing
 

Naval personnel apprehended 16 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities in two separate incidents. Accordingly, naval troops attached to SLNS Thammanna in Thalaimannar belonging to the North Central Naval Command, arrested 13 persons engaged in illegal fishing in the seas off Thalaimannar yesterday (28). Along with the suspects 3 Dinghies and 34 Monofilament nets used for fishing were taken into custody. The arrested persons and belongings were handed over to the Inspectorate of Fisheries in Mannar for further investigations.

Further, 3 persons engaged in illegal fishing activities using a banned fishing net in the sea area west of Walaipadu were arrested by the naval personnel attached to SLNS Buwaneka in Nachchikuda of North Central Naval Command. The arrested persons along with the items were handed over to the Inspectorate of Fisheries in Kilinochchi for onward legal action.
