Eastern and Southern Naval Commands win the Men and Women Championships respectively at the Inter Command Rugby Tournament 2015

At the final encounter of the Inter Command Rugby Championship 2015, which was conducted from 28th to 30th August at Welisara Rugby grounds, the Eastern Naval Command beat the Training Command and became the champion command winning the Cup Championship also. The Training Command was won the second place of the tournament being the runners-up of the Cup Championship. The Afloat Command secured third place and the Plate Championship was won by the Western Naval Command. The Bowl Championship was won by the Training Command ‘B’ team.

In the women category, the Southern Naval Command became the Champions and Eastern Naval Command became the Runners-up. The third place was secured by the Northern Naval Command.

The trophy of the Best Ruggerite (Men) was awarded to Officer Cadet KWMIS Rajapaksha of the Training Command and the Best Ruggerite (Women) was awarded to Able PTI P Dilani of the Southern Naval Command.

The Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne was the Chief Guest and gave away the trophies to the winners of the tournament. The Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Dayananda Nanayakkara, officers and sailors representing the naval commands were present on the occasion. A group of ruggerites who represented the Navy in the 80’s also were among the large crowd gathered to witness the keenly contested tournament. As a token gesture of appreciation of their presence, the Commander of the Navy presented mementoes to those former navy rugger players and they also reciprocated presenting a special memento to the Commander of the Navy. On completion, the commander of the Navy posed for a group photograph with them.
